Henri Matisse

Henri Matisse was born on December 31, 1869 in France. In the 1940's Matisse began creating cut paper collages, often rather large pictures, called gouaches decoupes. He called this new technique "painting with scissors".

We looked at the following collages by Henri Matisse.....

Then my class got to paint with their scissors and created these beautiful collages.

Cleopatra Mosaics

My students had a fun time learning all about
Cleopatra and Egyptian hieroglyphics. She was a
brilliant queen who learned the language of her
people. We had a great time executing this
project.

Warm and Cool Color Snowmen

The students learned the difference between warm and cool colors. They were instructed to create snowmen and then divide the background into four sections. Then paint each section in warm colors; such as red, orange, yellow and pink or in cool colors; such as green, blue and purples. The results came out beautifully!

Burton Morris Artwork

Burton Morris was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1964. He earned his bachelor of fine arts degree at Carnegie Mellon University in 1986. After graduation, Burton started a career as an art director in advertising. The Artist established the Burton Morris Studios in 1990.  That year he began making his small post-pop icons into large scale paintings. He would choose one subject per composition to create what he calls “an instant happening” for the viewer. He used his background in advertising to blur the lines between high and low art.

His artwork appeared in the television show Friendshe produced signature images for the 76th annual Academy Awards, for FIFA World Cup Soccer, The United Nations, the 38th Montreux Jazz Festival, and Major League Baseball’s 2006 All-Star Game to name a few. Original artworks have been commissioned for corporations and institutions such as H.J. Heinz, Absolut Vodka, Chanel Corporation, Warner Brothers, Perrier, AT&T, Kellogg's Corporation and the U.S. State Department. In addition, his artwork has helped to raise millions of dollars for charities worldwide.

So enjoy the artwork or my third graders inspired by the genius pop artist; Burton Morris!

Georgia O'Keeffe Watercolor Paintings

Georgia O'Keeffe was a perfect artist to bring in the spring. Her stunning flowers, gorgeous skyscapes and shells from the sea get us excited for the warm weather to come. We concentrated on her technique of cropping or creating close-ups of nature and the children painted their own flowers using this unique style. Hope you enjoy, we certainly did!
